About Us

The Dade County Medical Association works hard on behalf of Miami-Dade County physicians.  Founded in 1903, the DCMA is proud and honored to be the largest association representing physicians in Miami-Dade County. DCMA provides a number of benefits to our members - click on Membership and then Membership Benefits on the drop down menu to see what you are missing.

A key example of our hard work is the Managed Care Bill (SB 1012 and HB 405) that passed in the 2008 Florida Legislative Session.  DCMA and FMA worked diligently to secure passage of this legislation.  By way of background, the 2002 prompt pay law gave managed care companies 30 months after the payment of a physician's claim to recoup any amount that was allegedly overpaid or was paid in error.  The passage of this bill changes the Managed Care Organizations (MCO's) "look back" period from 30 months to 12 months, effective with claims submitted after November 1, 2008.  In the 2009 Florida Legislative Session we hope to build upon this victory and pass legislation requiring MCO's to pay claims for patients they have confirmed with the physician's staff are on the MCO's plan (i.e., eliminate retroactive denials).

The real issue for physicians should not be what the Dade County Medical Association can do for them, but what  physicians can do to protect the integrity of the medical profession for future generations.   Community based and academic physicians need to commit to organized medicine to ensure that the young professionals they train will have a vigorous and healthy profession in which to practice.  Given the restrictions under managed care and severe government cutbacks for teaching, research, and clinical care, academic physicians should rally around organized medicine.  Likewise, for many of the same reasons, community based physicians need to commit to organized medicine;  who besides the DCMA continues to push for legislative and regulatory solutions to the many challenges facing the health care system and will continue to fight against any measures that would decrease access to quality health care and harm the citizens of Miami-Dade County.

Physician members are the strength and power of the Dade County Medical Association.  Continued growth - by reaching as high as we can, we achieve our full potential - service to our members and the patients they serve.  Strength and power give the DCMA clout!  Clout to fight for your right to practice quality, non-governmentally controlled medicine.

The business of health care is constantly changing, but the focus of the DCMA remains on you and your patients.  For over 100 years, the DCMA has stood out as an indispensable resource for physicians dedicated to the same goals and objectives you want for yourself and your patients.  Fulfill the commitment you made to yourself and your patients when you entered medical school and complete the circle - join the Dade County Medical Association.  If you are already a member, please renew your membership today.  If you are not a member, please click on Membership and complete the appropriate application.
